How To Stain Pine Furniture

Posted under Pine, Stains, Wood

Using wood Stains can be a tricky process. Pine can easily absorb the stain in an uneven way, or the stain can be applied too thick which means it will dry incorrectly and be tacky.

To start with you will need to prepare the wood. Sanding and cleaning is required for the best preparation. Sanding will remove a previous coating, if there was one, and it also will open up the grain so it will penetrate the wood better. Once you have completed the sanding you will need to make sure you have cleaned all the dust off. To do this it’s best to use a tack cloth. A tack cloth is a pad that is made from treated loose weave fabric. It will catch every little piece of dust.

Then rub the pigment in to the wood in a circular motion using a soft cloth. Wipe over again in the direction of the wood grain. Repeat the process to deepen the color until you get the result you are after.

To protect the stained wood apply a polyurethane top coat, making sure to stir it well before use. Always apply in the direction of the wood grain.

Posted under Furniture, Pine, Pine Furniture, Wood

If your looking to brighten up a room in your house, painting a piece of pine furniture is a simple way to freshen it up. With so many colors you can choose from these days, it’s the perfect way to keep your funiture looking like brand new.

Firstly you have to fill in the scratches and blemishes with a wood filler or putty, then you will need to sand back the wood so it is nice and smooth. Wipe down the surface with a damp cloth, now you are ready to start painting.

Begin by applying a primer base coat. Priming helps the paint to adhere better to the surface. Start by painting in the direction of the wood grain, use smooth, even brush strokes, start from one end and work your way to the other. The primer won’t cover uniformly, so don’t worry if it looks patchy.

Choosing The Right Sandpaper

Posted under Furniture, Pine Furniture, Stains, Wood

Before you start sanding down your pine furniture you will need to know what grade of sandpaper grit is needed for the job you intend to do. If you choose the wrong grade of paper it could damage the wood and make more work for you to repair it.

furniture sanding Choosing The Right Sandpaper

What is sandpaper grit?

Sandpaper comes in different grades which means they range from very coarse to fine. On the back of the sandpaper there is a number that represents what grade it is. The bigger the number means the paper is fine, and the smaller the number, the paper gets coarser.

What grade to use and when

Very coarse grit – Use this one to rip off peeling paint or to sand down a very rough surface.

Medium grit – This is a good grit to use if you’re not sure what to start with. You can’t go too wrong as you can always go up or down in grades if it’s not the right one.

Fine grit – Normally you wouldn’t use this when you first begin your new project. Fine grit is usually used for your second and third sandings to roughen up the wood so you can apply another coat of paint or finish.

So if you’ve bought some new pine furniture or just renovating some old furniture, it’s really easy to choose the right sandpaper for the job.
